Mastering habit automation

When it comes to creating a healthier lifestyle, there’s an arsenal of information out there surrounding how to form new habits.

For example: Studies show it takes at least 21 days to form a new habit.

Another example: Most people join and complete nutrition and exercise programs that support them to form new habits within that 21 day time limit (or in some cases, longer: 30day or 60day) and some need longer.

The problem I see comes when that window of time ends  (i.e.21 days, or 30 days, 60 days, etc...). Once the support is gone, people become lost as to what to do next and they are confused as to how to maintain their new habits.

The secret to lasting transformation (especially when it comes to goals such as weight loss or healthy weight management, consistent exercise and healthy eating) boils down to something more important than the formation of a new habit….

It’s practicing it enough until it becomes automatic: i.e. Habit Automation

Most people don’t practice their new habits long enough to turn the habit into automatic instinctive behavior.

Not only that, instead of practicing these habits during tumultuous times in their lives they decide to do the opposite and completely let go. Thereby getting stuck in the never ending cycle of dieting, not dieting, exercising, and not exercising.

If you are able to keep up a practice through challenging times, you will be more likely to stick to it when things are easier.

🟠 Imagine being able to eat meals without wondering if you are making the right choices, even when you are under high stress or are extremely tired. These kinds of triggers are not enough to derail your automatic habits.

🟠 Imagine being able to rely on your good habit practice to carry you through challenging times rather than letting oneself simply fall into the habit of self- neglect (which is usually the case) until times are better.

🟠Imagine choosing to be indulgent without worrying what the consequences will be to your body. Imagine how much time you would get back when you cut out the endless agonizing over food, the shoulds or should nots, or thinking “I’ve been good” vs “I’ve been bad.”

If you learn to automate habits that allow you to instinctively, easily,  and effortlessly decide what to eat and when etc... versus trying to get back on the wagon, you will be well on your to achieving your health goals.

Achieving this takes practicing habits... Over and over again. Through good times and ESPECIALLY through the bad times, which is when most people give up on their health routines entirely...

Unless they become automatic.

If those new habits you formed are not yet automatic, you have some practicing to do.
